    Default Tasmania Star

I sailed on the Tasmania Star May 1969 to August 1969 and was told that her funnel when she was launched was bigger than the ones on Queen Mary and Elizabeth, can any one shed any light on this matter.

I dont know about the tssie star but the Tacoma star that I sailed on had a tall thin funnel , maybe it was a company trademark cant see them being bigger than the mary,s though. I will take a look on photoship.co.uk lots of pics on that site.

    Hi all.
Sorry i haven't a answer for your question. But i do remember that the blue star boats had a reputation for having extra large funnels, so it might be true ( mines bidder than yours). When in Southampton as a deck boy, one of the queens was tied up ahead of us and a few of us went and had a look at her from the quay side. Boy was she high ,we all had to crane our necks to look up at her.
Tried to play the sound recording on that site Vernon , but it was so loud it frooze my puter.

Well the Star ships I was on it was recognised that when painting the funnel we had to have it finished that day irrespective of how much overtime it would cost. An old myth on them was also that we used to have prayer mats out in the morning to worship the funnel. Forget at the moment what Star ship it was on the South American port that had sunk but they still kept the funnel painted as it was still showing. Think it was in Montevideo but probably wrong on that score as well. They where always the feature of the ships to have larger funnels than others.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

    Default Tasmania Star 1969

    Hi John,

Good to hear from you, what department were you in? I remember on that trip we carried general cargo to Kiwi and lamb and butter home , I remember that the stores ran out of butter and the engineers broke into one of the holds to get some, I also remember being rationed to 3xCans of beer a night and saving them up before we hit the first Port.

Default Size of Queen Mary's Funnel

    Dear Andrew,

I am unable to say whether the funnel of the Queen Mary was bigger than the Tasmania Star. But the photograph of me standing in front of the funnel may help you decide which was bigger.

    Kindest reagrds

    Roy

Default Size of Queen Mary's Funnel

Whoops, the photograph is of of two of my Engine Room cabins mates. Hopefully this photograph is of me on the Queen Mary in 1962.

The Barclays larger in the crews bar was one shilling a pint and while I am unable to say if the funnel was bigger, I can say that while standing on the dock side in the freezing cold of a New York winter watching for oil from the overflow pipes, the funnel did seem at times to grow and shrink.

    Kindest regards

    Roy
