Closest I ever got to Blue Funnel was sitting next to their junior officers in Orleans House. Fortunately too busy worrying about Capt Fletchers demeanor than to take in other things. Saying that, they did have an excellent reputation.

Rightly so , well maintained and well paid ,apart from tanker companies I doubt if there were many other companies would have matched them for pay and conditions.

#32. They would have to pay well as from all accounts you were at deaths door when they promoted one to Master. I recall sitting for First Mates (FG) with men whose only experience was as Fourth Mate with a Second Mates (FG) and up for Masters (FG) with men who had only sailed as Third Mate. They were allowed to sail as Second Mate once obtaining Masters (FG). That to me, who had always sailed as certificate of rank needed some understanding. There was obviously a draw that those of us on the outside did not understand.

I am helping a man who was on Blue Funnel ships from 1952 to 1968. I have the names of all the ships he was on and his discharge book. Can anyone remember going to South Africa or Fremantle on Blue Funnel ships please? Also can anyone give me the contact details for the Blue Funnel Association? Thank you.
