#31 Wasnt Gin the other cheap drink in South Africa at one time ? The brandy we bought in the Del Monica we always called Ginger squares , at least I did, but have often misheard names at times . The ginger was for the ginger ale in the glass, dont know what the square was for . Maybe when you got too inebriated to notice they switched to an oxo cube. ? Believe the playhouse in Durban had the same owners as both had what people thought was no roof and thought they were looking at the stars , so both places expected their customers to finish up lying on their backs and admiring the night sky. Not unlike the planetarium in London or old Madam Tussauds. Cheers JS

Yes Gin was plentiful in those days JS, but sadly not a good Drink for all as it had some bad effects on many, too many Fights etc. The Ginger Squares were a much better Drink and tasted a lot better as well.

The Playhouse and Del were as far as i know not owned by the same People though!

But i cannot be 100% sure on that! Something to try and look up ?

    Cheers

There was a time when KWV was considered the best Brandy in SA.
As to Gin, the drink of the sophisticated, and the alchis, is one of the most refreshing drinks there is.

Dr Gordons in those days sold tow flavored ones, Lemon and Orange .
Only place I ever saw then until recently when spotted in Dan's an orange one.
Must give it a try and see if it is the same.

Knew a 'lady' there who liked it neat and the Gin as well, wonder what she does now for a thrill?

The Playhouse, only place in SA we were thrown out of all because we tried to save the waiter some strap up time by drinking the beer out of our shoes.
    Funny lot then in Durban.
Nothing more disturbing than a dirty night in Durban in the morning.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

Always thought you lot in UCL were the founder members of K at T s Oddfellows Club. Maybe it wasnt the Gin leaving a funny taste in the mouth. JS

KWV is no doubt a very good drop John, but with time things change and to be honest the Klipdrift has really taken over, the sales are through the Roof! Even at the Prices! But KWV will stand the test of time thats for sure!
Yes Gordons was the pick of the Gin as well but as said seemed to make many completely loopy headed!
