I remember that typhoon Cappy, real trouser browner, also remember being in one of your old trouble ports, Walleroo, tied up to the old jetty for grain, who knows you might have been on the run there at the same time, or maybe in the clink !!!, could have bought you up a few bottles after the 6 o'clock swill,, The nurses school was there ??, or was it Ardrossan which was our next lading port, happy days kt

#41... Just to keep Cappy salvinating 3 verses from 17 of a poem in the poetry section of the site.
I"ll do the lap of honour round the Australian coast,
to see the girls who loved me the most
from Thursday Island round to Sydney and Perth
they were the lovliest girls on Earth

I"ll go to see Shiela and then Mary Lou
and call on Sally in Wooloomoloo
then go up to Townsville and see Mary O"keefe
Where we walked hand in hand. By the Great Barrier Reef.

When I think of those days by a blue lagoon
loving my girl under a tropical moon
and those happy times that we both shared
and Marys still waiting for me so Ive heard.

Is she the one you ditched with the wooden leg...

    Cheers JS

Ship i was on in the Typhoon was the Durham Trader , i was in Walleroo much later in 61-62 as far as i can recall, by that time Cappy you were an Ex con so to speak, lol, i presume you came back after that little episode ?, was it one of those lovely local ladies that was the draw ?. Youngsters must lead a boring life compared to our daring days, but we still have the memories, even if sometime they are in the wrong order, kt

well its was a combination of things ......i was galley boy ...the second cook got badley burned i was given assistant cook ...but found out the chief steward and cook were sharing the shorthand money ....which was a big lift from galley boy .....truly i had met a beuty from queensland she was on holiday down in wallaroo.....we were ready to go off when her father was told and not wishing her to be in tow with a young seaman whipped her back to queensland....i was very peed off with the cook who was one idle son of a bitch so decided to go walkabout .....wrote a poem about the galley boy on that trip will see if i can find it if anyone is interested...but these things were one big learning curve....and put me one step ahead many times in life .....happy days ...cappy

    the galley boy
the galley boy rose at the crack of the dawn
shuffled into the galley and felt the range warm
down the deep bunkerto top up the coal
then stumbled a bit as she gave a slight roll
on with the geyser the steam hissing loud
then put on the burgoo much loved by the crowd
the bacon he grilled the eggs he did fry
seven bells nearly he gave a loud sigh
in swaggered the cook also known as the doc
sleep in his eyes face stoney as rock
you idle young bugger but the boy is too quick
as the doc wasnt fast enough to give him a kick

the days of coal burners were going very quickly in the late 50s ...but a coal burning galley was one good range ....just getting the coal up from the bunker into the galley bunker was a mucky job .....i was the only geordie aboard a crowd of scousers ....but the bosun spotted me coming out the bunker .....and said its the deck boys job .....loved that one ...there was two deck boys taking turn at peggy ...while the other one got down the very narror bunker in the pitch black.....happy days cappy
