Re: holiday
Las Palmas was my first port of call on my first ship the Port Jackson in 1953. We were granted a half day shore leave and my mate said come on we're going ashore. I was as nervous as a whore in church but my new mate put me at ease when he told me he could speak Spanish.
We wandered around town and finally end up hungry and went into a little café. This was the first opportunity for my new "best" friend to practice the local lingo.
We sat down and the waitress came up to us, order book at the ready and said "Si?"
My buddy pointing first to her said, "You get for me"...then pointing to himself, "Dos sandwichios."
She replied, "Ham or cheese."
He turned to me and said "See...no problemo."
So we ate and returned safely to the ship, thanks to his linguistic skills.
Cheers, Rodney
