Re: awol
Hi Fred, my three Port Boats were 'Lowlander' 1947 Newcastle, NSW through the the Panama on the MANZ leg to Halifax Nova Scotia then across to Melbourne via Cape Verde Islands and Cape Town. Port Saint John 1949/1950 Sydney to Newcastle on Tyne via Suez (she was MANZ Line but returning to Britain after a thrashing she got in the Caribbean and subsequent dry dock in Sydney). Port Dunedin 1950 London NZ London.
I joined the SS Raranga SS&A Sydney to London but when the SS&A Gothic did your NZ/OZ route instead of NZ direct we called at Las Palmas. You strike a chord when you say 'Port Boats'. We always referred them to as that. I remember when on the old Port Dunedin I think it was the Port Auckland in NZ with her raked back bridge and classic lines and I bet beaut accommodation made us really envious.
