M.V. Limerick

I'm posting on behalf of my Father-in-Law Gordon Reynolds, who was an Engineer on the MV Limerick on the Aussie run in the 60s.

He would be delighted to hear from anyone who served aboard with him.

Louis ,I think Marshall's relative at sea in the 60's would mean the 1952 built m.v.LIMERICK (ON 184627 ) 6,443 grt cargo ship built as ENTON for Birt,Potter & Hughes Ltd ,London.

55 renamed LIMERICK upon sale to Avenue Shipping - 69 Renamed HOWRA upon transfer to fellow P & O company British India SN Co. In 1972 renamed GOLDEN HAVEN upon acquisition by Guan Guan Sg Pte.Ltd,Singapore.

The earlier m.v.LIMERICK you mention (ON 148634 built 1925 ,8,684 grt cargo ship ) was submarine torpedoed by Japanese sub I -177 (Cdr.Nakagawa Hajime*) in pos’n 28.54S/153.54E on 26/4/ 1943 with loss of 2 lives whilst on passage from Sydney to Brisbane.

During his war patrols on I-177 and also on I-37 ,Cdr. Nakagawa commited the most cruel war crimes against crews of merchant ships, using the deck gun to kill the surviving crew and sinking lifeboats. The victims ware:
British Chivalry (13 machine gunned), Sutlej (50 machine-gunned) and Ascot (45 machine gunned).







Notes:

1. In January 1947, Cdr Nakagawa pleaded guilty for his wartime crimes before the International Military Tribunal in Tokyo. He was sentenced to 8 years of hard labour. Nakagawa actually served six years and was released on probation after the end of the Allied Occupation.

2. Only in 1978, historical research found him responsible for having sunk the Australian hospital ship HMAS Centaur, while he was commander of I-177 (268 killed)

Hi Gulliver.
Good for those Bs to be exposed, in my mind and I'll never change the Japs were pure evil, shows what the powers that be thought of those seamen that they only gave that rat a sentence commensurate with what a burglar would get. I believe that the Sydney was also sunk by a jap u boat after the battle with the German raider and that they killed whoever was left.
