Learning how to use this. Looking to share memories from the old shipping days in the 50s and 60s on Athel line. David Finlay-Notman, chief officer and Captain

Hi David welcome to the site others will welcome you also. The only one I knew from Athol tankers was a chief engineer I sailed with in the 60"s from North Shields, sailed with him when I was mate o the Pennyworth and the Warkworth in the 60"s. See your from Fremantle just up the road from me in Singleton. The chiefs name was Candiotis and was from North Shields Regards JWS

    Hi,
My name is Doug Bay- I joined Athel Line in June '65 joining the old AthelDuke in Falmouth.
Stayed as a "company man" through several other Athel vessels till finishing on the Sovereign
as C/O in 1974. Swallowed the anchor and worked ashore ever since!
The Athel reunion is in York this year (2018) - look forward to seeing you there!
    Cheers

Douglas I sailed with a Cheng ex Athel line but may have been before your time by a couple of years. He was I think 2nd. Engineer with Athel line. Was involved in some fire on board one of their ships and burned pretty bad on the body. I knew him on three other ships of a different company commencing in 1964. His name was Candiotis and he lived in North Shields. Or Preston Village if you are more conversant with the area. But as said before your time by a few years. As to post 1 may even know you David in another walk of life, especially if you visit another establishment in Fremantle, which visit often. In fact was there all day last Saturday. Cheers to you both. JWS....

Hi David, we sailed onboard ATHELPRINCESS on the New Zealand/Nauru phosphate run where I was one of the deck apprentices. I joined in Hull on 18 September 1961 and we payed off on 30 January 1963 in Liverpool. As I remember you joined us with your good lady in Kiwi and took over as the Mate who was hospitalised. I finished my apprenticeship with Athel and did second mates followed by 4years with Common Brothers then joined Trident Tankers/P&O Bulk Shipping until 1980. I then came ashore and joined Marine Safety Services in London where I stayed as General Manager/ Director until I retired in 2004.
I see that you are in the Southern Hemisphere which I hope treats you well. Its good to be alive and kicking in this rapidly changing world.

    Best Regards
    Ron Crone
