Eighty British Merchant vessels were detained in German ports at the outbreak of WWI, the vast majority at Hamburg. Just about all were released at some point. Captain Sherwood had been Master of the 931grt cargo ship Equity (Coop Wholesale Soc.) when seized at Hamburg.
