    Default Contact with Stan Mays

    Thanks Hugh

    I think that both Dad (Ron Snashall) and uncle Mick served with Stan and I'm going to contact him shortly. I already have some information from him, that Dad sourced some years ago.

    Regards

    Alan

    The majority of the “Empire” named ships were built in the UK and USA and managed by shipping Companies, I don’t doubt that some were prize ships renamed,

    The “Empire Grenadier” for instance was a ship built by Furness ship building in Haverton Hill for the Ministry of War Transport in 1942 and managed by the Eagle oil Co see sample

    Default Special Ops for Liberation of Europe

    G'day all

    I've received Ron Snashall's official papers from the archive covering the period of his Special Ops service.

    I'd really appreciate help in deciphering it. The papers list:

    on the Merchant Navy Personnel form C.R.S.2
    Ship name - El.Nil off No. 145041
    LONDON
    N.R.T 4719 G.T. 7775
    N. H. P. 720

    and on the Summary of Service form I can make out most of the wording, but would appreciate help with the entry "So'ton" or "Soton" as a place of engagement. I assume it's shorthand for Southhampton, but would appreciate input.

    Regards to all

    Alan

    You can be pretty sure Soton stands for Southampton,it's a common abbreviation for the City.

    Hello Alan,

    NRT = Net Registered Tonnage.
    GT = Gross Tonnage.
    NHP = Nominal Horsepower.

    The card is a CR 2 not a CRS 2. Not picking but there is a difference between the two .

    Regards
    Hugh

    Thanks, Gulliver - have changed original post to reflect.
