I have too amend my previos post and say that liverpool on payoff day was the best placee , and chittagong bangladesh was the worst, used too be east packistan
I`m with you regarding Genoa ,we used to hire vespers and race around the town stopping at many bars to refresh ! Cadiz & Lisbon wasn`t that bad either . Stories from those ports would turn a few hairs I can tell you ,some can never be told ! Auckland was also a great port with wonderful girls aplenty until a Yank war ship tied up then the competition got tough.
Staying at sea for EVER would have been wonderful but in my case I thought the love of a good woman ashore was the ultimate .....close but............... I thought the really good bit about being at sea you never really thought of anything good or bad that was happening around the world. Even today I will read something that happened many years ago that was quite mind blowing but in our tiny `sea world` we didn`t know it was taking place. Though as young men we grew up very quickly we were cocooned for a lot of the time. I for one hardly ever read a news paper & most times the papers were `foreign`anyway & what you would read was very old magazines or dog eared Micky Spillane paper backs or Carter Brown . That just reminded me of the guy from the `Mission` bringing aboard old Picture Post and asking ``Wheres the boys cabins ?``
Was the DDT for crabs ? Our 2nd. Steward gave me blue unction but I elected to use DDT applied from a salt shaker ! Have to say it burnt like crazy and just imagine shrivelled peaches !! At least it stopped `em reaching my eye brows !!

Oooh.....Best place!!! With Bank Line there were so so many...Just start at A and they keep on going until Z. Just name a few Majunga, Madagascar, Valparaiso, Chile, Buenaventura, Colombia and good old Liverpool, where I met my wife!!! Worst would have to be Bandar Shapour in Iran, even when the Shah was still there....3 months mostly at anchor to off load 10,000T of sugar cubes from Chile!!
