Looking back the best and worse place was the table when signing on and of. I did not realise that signing on was the best thing for me and likewise signing of was the worse especially the last time.
There's a coincidence,in two posts we have Les(wistfully wishing he could sign on again, and Noodles, who is hoping to do the same.....or perhaps it's Nood Les!,sitting there round that table with no clothes on!:))
Well, Noodles(in Derry)..I don't know about "koren",but I do know Nouadhibou (I had to use the spellchecker on that one!).You didn't miss much by not going ashore.I was there, not on a ship, but in transit on an Air Afrique ("Scare Freak!" flight from Paris to Abidjan. It was the middle of the night and they turfed us off the plane whilst they refuelled it,a bit frightening in the Airport really with half the population of the town, and machine-gun wielding "military" all milling around! Needless to say I called them "Sir":D.
Another episode by plane was in Nigeria from Lagos to Port Harcourt. There were no boarding passes issued, and when boarding time was eventually called,it was a mass dash to get a seat...just like a ruddy bus!
Of course ,the flight was 'overbooked',so we all had to deplane and be 'marched' round the aircraft on the hot tarmac, until we were formed into an orderly queue to reboard That's the only airline where the stewardesses don't smile(but who can blame them?...I won't say it's name 'cause I might be inundated with Scam-Mails!.
Oh Africa !....you break my heart....
Cheers from Gulliver:)
Hi Shipmates' dont remember much about Africa, except they liked steal ing your shoes'? but not south Africa very nice beer and stuff,The best place was America, and south america, but most places' seem like a distance dream {The beer was a lot stronger in them days} Had a great time allmost every where, except iceland. too cold!!:D
ShoesHey Louis. We often carried containers full of shoes out to West Africa from Far East. To avoid pilferage, the shippers stowed left -foot shoes in one container, and right-foot in another. They were still broken into on the quay of course.
You would take a walk through the port, and see dockers exchanging one left for one right shoe.....if they could find a matching pair of the same style! I always remember seeing a big 'butch' African hobbling through the dock gate,,wearing one left white men's shoe, and one red right ladies court-shoe...(There's always one, isn't there?)
Actually there were quite a few...Hey, no matter,it's still a pair!
SpecsWe also carried spectacles. They were clear-plastic lenses, ready to be fitted with prescription lenses in town.
The shipper used to have to add an extra 20% shipped to cover pilferage. No matter...all gone.
We stood at the gangway and watched all day as hundreds of dockers, disguised as 'professors',with their newly-acquired spectacles worked in the port.:)
Ah! Africa....I miss you!
Gulliver
Almost impossible
Antwerp ( for the night life )
Kobe ( for another type of night life )
Victoria Vancouver island( for the view )
Port Sudan ( for the heat the flys and the smell )
Pete:eek:
Gulliver's tale reminds me of an event in Cape Town many moons ago. Matches were all ther go but the first disposable lighters were on the market. A cargo of them arrived from somewhere up North, maybe Sweden, well the match company bought the lot and dumped them in the bay. They considered them to be a thrteat to their business.
Like most sailors I sailed all over the world, eventually I arrived at St Helier in Jersey , fantastic place the best . the worst Port Sudan.
hey pete. port sudan?. you forgot the lovely swimming pool at the seamans mission. alf
