Best & worst place.

Not the worst but one of the odd ones was Valetta in Malta. We went looking for a bar and found a small street with yellow water running down the gutter. It was coming from just about every bar in the place. Go in the bar and in the corner is a curtain, behind it a very full bucket, flowing from this is the yellow river. The grog was great the people great, but the smell from behind the curtain would bring tears to a glass eye.

chittagong, in east pakistan, now bangladesh, the worst. best were kobe, yokahama, and pago pago met some nice ladies in both places

Spent six days in Chittagong in the,then,best hotel waiting for the Lanmar to arrive.Cockroaches the size of rabbits,Khazi a hole in the ground,pissed down all the time I was there.Three different menus in the restaurant(can't believe I said that)English(allegedly)Chinese(reasonable) and Pakistani,usually had the Pakistani at least you couldn't tell what you were eating(and I love curries).High spot of my stay was being taken out by the agent to the local club patronised by the local big wigs-don't think the furnishings had been altered since the Brits left.Alan

Remember many years ago on one of my rare trips to U.K. we had to stop in India, never fly B.A. again, the airport was something else to see. We were not allowed off as there had been a fire in the transit lounge. Couple of trips later with Quantas, never fly them again, we were allowed off. Think we did better the first time, the lounge made Oliver Twist look very good, so if you ever get the chance to go there take my tip, dont bother.

Between leaving the Oriana in 1970 and joining ESSO in 1971 I travelled overland to Australia. To cut a long story short I finished up in Chittagong on New Year’s Eve. It was the most miserable quiet New Year’s Eve I’ve ever had. Nothing happening in the “hotel” I was staying in, so had a walk around the town – nothing. Imagine what that was like – 22 year old, on your own and no-one to talk to.

Port area of Liverpool was crap last time I visited but in the sixties it was a great place to be and SAFE.Plenty of dockside pubs,seedy club's,mobile snack bars etc.There was even a guy drove a van down every weekday morning from Fleetwood selling FRESH caught fish.I've had some marvellous times in Liverpool but ,as with Manchester(Ex dock area full of yuppie flats,cinemas,etc)all the scruffy,but very friendly,pubs have been demolished in the name of "Developement"Nothing against modernisation but they seem to wrench the heart out of places these days and all the cameraderie with it.

Spent my 18th in Piareaus on the Carmania most of the day on the Ouzo [the stuff with the plant in it] got sent down from the galley the next day just for drinking a pint of water.[a new experience]

Real good stuff that ouzo, just goes to show that drinking water may not always be good for you.

You have got to be right mate Chittagong was the pitts. I could name dozens of the best ports, I enjoyed them all.

hi all the best place for me was vitoria, spent four days there loading iron ore.a wonderful place, all the bars just over the railway tracks. girls galore' what more could you ask for.
