The 'Nerissa'
Sorry I do not know if the ship by the name of 'Nerissa' was Royal Navy or Merchant Navy.
I subscribe to the 'Commonwealth and British Badge Collector's Forum, and somebody has asked for information of the ship on which his grandfather was lost. Sounds like WW2. I suggested he log on here if it was a Merchant Navy vessel, but now it has got me curious: Please can anybody give me information about a ship of that name.
My apologies for being so dumb about these matters, I was army, and I don't suppose it helps to say my father was a Royal Marine.......ah well, we all have our cross to bear, and you people were so very helpful to me when I was looking for info on the 'New Australia' a while back, for which I am most grateful.
Best wishes.

ss Nerissa
Many thanks for the information. I knew I could rely on you to come up with it, and I have passed it on to the bloke who asked about it, and added to my knowledge along the way.
Best wishes,

Passenger cargo ship Nerissa, 5,583grt, (Bermuda & West Indies SS Co.) had been sailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia and St. John’s, Newfoundland with 175 passengers and a general cargo including aluminium, shells and motor trucks. (Conflicting sources state the ship was a straggler from Convoy HX-121, but I have not been able to find this ship listed from any convoy records to verify this). On the 30th April 1941 South-East of Rockall the ship was torpedoed by U-552. The two torpedo hits broke the ship in half and she turned over and plunged beneath the sea in position 56’ 08N 10’ 27W. Twenty-three crew, six DEMS gunners, three stowaways and fifty-one passengers survived the sinking and were picked up by the Destroyer HMS Veteran and transferred to the Corvette HMS Kingcup before being landed at Londonderry. The Captain, eighty-one crew and one hundred and twenty four passengers perished.
Amongst the casualties from the Nerissa were the two Halligan brothers, William and Benjamin, William was ony 15 years old.
"Across the seas where the great waves grow, there are no fields for the poppies to grow, but its a place where Seamen sleep, died for their country, for you and for peace" (Billy McGee 2011)
