    Default My Grandfather

Hello, I have recently found out who
My grandfather was and that he served in the Merchant Navy during WW2. His name was William Harold Lawlor and he was born in 1909 in Newport, South Wales, UK. I have paid the National Archives to do a search for him but they can’t find any records. All I know is that he was in New York in March 1942 as I have a copy of his Alien Registration Receipt card granting shore leave and stamped March 2nd 1942. Have I reached a dead end or can I still find out any information about him? Many thanks.

    Hello Jayne
Thank you for th Posting, it seems that we have yet another mystery here!
I say this as i have looked quite extensively through all my usual channels , but like the Archives not come up with the name , i had also tried Lawler , just in case as errors were made in those Years.

Surname Given Name District Volume Page

    Births Jun 1909
    Lawlor William Harold Newport, M. 11a 293

I dont know what info you had given to the Archives for your Search, however was it for a CR10 or CRS10 at all.

There could still be some record of his at the Southampton Maritime Archives, as they hold many many Original Records there still.
May be worth giving them a try by Email and giving as much info as you can.

    Our collections

    Good Luck

PS Can you upload that Certificate in case it may help!?
    Thanks

Hi, many thanks for taking the time to respond. I will upload the certificate now. I also found a newspaper articles referring to his brother’s death. He was also in the merchant navy and was presumed dead after his ship was sunk by a u boat. His name was Arthur David Lawlor. I will upload what I have. The National Archives said they searched everthing and couldn’t find him I have a photograph that could either be William or Arthur. I think it’s William as he’s in uniform. The photograph of Arthur in the newspaper is in civies. Wouldn’t they have used the photo of him in uniform if it was him?

    Hi Jayne
In your pictures one was in the Royal Navy by his uniform, if that one is your Father then he will have no records in the National Archives.
Do you have his discharge book with any ships names?

Hi Des, I don’t have any more documents. When I found out who my grandfather was, I was able to make contact with the daughter of his cousin. He lived with them in the last years of his life and these were amongst his possessions. I wondered if that was a Royal Navy uniform but in the newspaper article, it says he was in the Merchant Navy. We can’t be sure that is him but it is one of his photographs. It’s odd that we can’t find any record of him with the Merchant Navy though.
