Post The Role of Conductor on a Cargo Ship

A relative was a Conductor on a cargo ship.
The vessel was M V Leverbank built in 1925 and scrapped in 1958.
The vessel was part of the fleet for The Bank Line Ltd.

In Calcutta, my relative was given a letter stating "To whom it may concern. Conductor S G Hirst is to be allowed access to the vessel at all times ....."

I have been unable to locate a photo of the vessel and the meaning of "Conductor"

    Best regards
    Tony F

Was your relative an Indian or lascar seaman ? And was this document a reference from a ship. The only
Conductors I know apart from a piece of metal able to carry an electric current, are those on a bus or conducting the Philamonic Orchestra.indian seamen always looked for a written reference on leaving a ship at least they did on the ones I was on. Remember one showing me his from his last ship , It was a glowing report but spoilt at the end , by saying but don’t pay him any money he’s not worth it.A very cruel joke on someone who couldn’t read or write. Cheers JS.

Tony she was built by H&W cargo ship for Bank Line, launched 24 September 1925, completed 23 November 1925. There are several photos of her but they are all copy right protected. Concerning the Conductor/ job. I wonder as you mentioned Calcutta and in all likely hood she may have carried passengers, but as Deck passengers and his job was to collect tickets as they boarded. I remember when on ED's down the west african coast we carried deck passengers around the coast. They lived in Hatch tents basically a Tarpaulin hooked up to a derrick to form a bell type tent.

The reason you can not find a picture of the LEVERBANK,is because it does not exist.
The actual ship name is the LEVERNBANK.
There are Three pictures of this ship in our gallery.

Mike , Doc that is not the Levernbank built in 1925. Which I believe Tony is asking about.
Remove if deemed to be infringing copyright, the reason I did not post in the first place.
The vessel to which you (both) refer to is this one.

MO 5207275, Cargo Ship, British Flag, built 1961 by Harland & Wolff, Belfast. 8,567gt, diesel 15 knots, History: 1961 launched as LEVERNBANK, Bank Line Ltd: 1973, wrecked, 1nm north of Matarani, sank in tow.

Pic Deleted due to Copyright ??

I think Tony did an edit on his original post as I am sure he posted the ships name as Levernbank!!!

The cruiser stern in#5 should have been an indicator it was not a 1925 vessel

Yes Mike, I thought that would be the case. I mentioned in my #6 to remove it if it was infringing copyright.
But curious what gives the likes of Pin Interest or Alamy to claim copyright over old photographs. Copyright ends 70 years after the death of the photographer or can a company buy the copyrights of others works?
