    Default Merchant Navy research

I'm new to this! Could anyone point me in the right direction to finding out where my Grandfather served in the W11? I believe he was in the Merchant Navy. Thank you. x

    Hello Hazel
As i have searched my normal channels and not come up with any Seamans Pouch for your G/Fathers records, you would have to now check this Link, as he could have records here!
Need to ask for copy to be sent to you , at a cost . This would be his CRS10 Cards which would if found have all his Sea time Service Records from 1941 to 1946
There may also be other records for other Years , you could ask when applying.

I will check to see if he may have serve n another Section as well.
    Cheers

this was my reply....not quite sure what this all means to be honest, apart from I'm not getting anything for my fee...but unsure where to go from here.

    You

    Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting The National Archives with your request for a page check. Your order number is RC7424692

Unfortunately the information that you have provided is insufficient to enable us to complete a page check. We cannot provide a page check service if it would be necessary to search through a document to find specific pieces of information which may be located randomly throughout it.

In some cases, items which are listed separately in Discovery, our catalogue, are not physically separate documents. Instead they form part of a larger document and have to be located within that document in order to provide a page check. We will make every effort to locate such items but, occasionally, this is not possible.

examples that help us identify a person record is Place of birth, service number, date of birth, surnames etc... out of the volume of service people records within the document.

You can go to: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/h...-for-research/ and pay someone to carry out research on your behalf, or you can come to The National Archives to view the original records for free. Alternatively, you may wish to submit a new request.

We wish you every success in your research.

    Thank you,
    The record copying team

    Hello Hazel
It can be a bit confusing for you and of course the Archives, if insufficient information is not given, and as i done know exactly what you gave them, its hard to say.
If you went to the Link that i gave you, and followed the prompts etc. On the page that askes for info, what did you actually give them?

Lowe M to Lowrie H B | The National Archives

As the Link covers many names and Files, they would need only the details of the Person you are asking about, did you give this ??

I ask as its very strange the reply you got has not got any real info in it!
All other Persons that i have helped where i can, have seemed to get a lot more from the Archives, so possibly and i do say possibly , you are not going about this in the correct manner??

    Did you follow all this?

    Requesting a page check

Send us detailed information about what you would like copied, and we will carry out a page check to determine whether it is possible to make a copy. A page check involves a member of staff collecting the relevant record from our repositories, looking for the information you’ve specified and assessing the record’s suitability for copying. The page check costs £8.40 and is non-refundable. This covers the cost of the service and is agreed by the Treasury.
    Ordering your copy

If the page check shows that we can make a copy we will email you with a full breakdown of the cost of copying the record. If not, we will email you to explain why we are not able to make a copy.

If you choose to go ahead with your order, you can decide whether you would like to receive a digital copy via email, or a hard copy by post.

Page Check Request When page opens Click on "Get Started"

On this page you need to supply all the information you have , which is what they ask. Of course you dont have his Discharge Number so thats out!
By all the info you give they should be able to locate his name if he indeed was in the Merchant Navy!

Please let me know all the details /
    Thanks
