Just been watching a programme that I came across on the channel 4 streaming channel called Dockers. Starring Ken Stott and Ricky Tomlinson about the Liverpool dockers strike in 95. Have to say I didn't know how long it lasted ( Sept 95 to Jan 98). They refused to cross an unofficial picket line of some sacked workers who had refused to work overtime. The strike was never an official strike as the union refused to back them as there had been no official ballot. Worth a watch if you can.

Stopped at Pitcairn once on route to Kiwi on the Illyric the boats came out and we had Mail for them and lots of other stuff I can't remember, we must have been there a good few hours , remember my cabin mate getting a carving of a turtle.

Hi John.
Thinking back I think the reason for you being allowed on the coast in the 70s may have been the fact that the small coastal tanker was laid up, I can't remember why, I know they only had the one tanker distributing on the coast, although the delivery of Crude was done by the British tankers.

#22 Your probably correct , I wasn’t that too perturbed about the whys and wherefores in those days, it was just another job. I never was a committed tanker man but if needs be that was it. It was the era and birth of the big supertanker and J.I.J Had one laid up in the Norwegian fiords waiting for the market to pick up , and it was a quick grooming for that to get a bit more of now useless information. Whenever I see these garage adverts of the big oil majors advertising their petrol I always wonder do they drop a couple of aspirins or something into the goo to make it different to each other , every thing that we loaded and discharged went direct to the garage either BP , Shell , Puma,Tiger ,or whatever , no difference at all, except in the price that the driver paid unknowingly .Cheers JS

Hi John.
I saw that with my son,a few years ago, he had to drive me to the eye clinic and I told him to fill his car up I would pay, said go into the BP {Old habits die hard,LoL] he said he only used Shell, I aid all the same oil, he said he got more mileage with Shell, spent the trip explaining things to him but to no avail.

Des, bit on the talk back radio today with a car 'expert' saying using high grade petrol would make no difference.
He advocates we use the USA system and promote more Ethanol fuels.

Basically we have three Petrols here in the UK, Super Unleaded, E5 & E10, these are the % of Ethanol added to regular petrol.
Think we only have one type of Diesel at the pumps, but not driving now so do not pay a lot of attention but alway mention to the boss fill it up with E10 it is perfectly ok for use and does not cause any harm to the engine.

Here in Oz we have super 98 Octane, a 95 Octane and unleaded 91Octane
We have E 10 ethanol which is usually about 5 cents cheaper than unleaded.
Some motoring groups say do not put E 10 in new cars as it effects rubber seals!!
Others say you dop not need the top fuel for modern cars, bit of a difference between dealers.
Diesel is normal or truck diesel.
I know some who use truck diesel and say it is no different from normal, just flows at a higher speed.

We arrived in Sydney on the ACT3 in 1979 and the start of discharge was delayed because one unloader had a cab where its light had gone out. It was 0800 and daylight!

Truck diesel is that Red diesel? we refer to that agricultural fuel, not permited to used in Diesel cars as it is VAT free?

#28 Depending on the terms of the charter party that could be a stoppage against the ship or the charterer. A ship on a voyage charter it is usually stipulated in the c/p that a ship is ready in all respects to discharge at X number of tons a day, weather and other stipulations provided. Time starts usually 24 hours after of Notice of Readiness is lodged at the Customs House. Every thing in the commercial world of shipping as per cargo dis/load. revolves round weather working days Lay time,demurrage etc. etc. if one knew the work involved in keeping the time sheets and who was responsible for not keeping up the c/p agreement would realize that it was the second mates responsiblbilty to keep the score on ships I was on , so the 2/mate was not just a pretty face .JS
