Re: Can you assist please
Hi Rosie,
First off... Never apologise for asking for help. OK?
I am too young to have a relative that served on the Arctic Convoys..... The men that did....did a brilliant, valiant job under the worst possible sea conditions.
To get supplies to Russia...so that they could continue the war......and relieve the pressure in the west.
It was vital.... Vital that Russia could fight..... and those convoys were a major factor in the following months and the ultimate result.
The lesson, I feel here is that Russia has always acknowledged the Arctic Convoys and have a memorial service annually to show their appreciation.
Compare that to the Allies:
They only recently acknowledged the sacrifice of these brave men., on those awful convoys....decades after the event. Just shameful in my view. Shockingly shameful.
As another example of the total lack of respect to Merchant Seamen lost during WW2. Unarmed men..... killed trying to feed Britain...keep Britain afloat....
There are war memorials up and down the land to commemorate our brave people....lost in wars.....quite rightly so.... But, just one memorial to the thousands who died at sea...as Merchant Seamen. Unarmed .Defenseless.
I have not really answered your question Rosie... but I hope you understand my response.
The men who perished on those Arctic Convoys deserve our deepest respect.
