i have a basic understanding of how copy right works - you cannot use someones work and more to my point image for profit making it - am i right - but what happens if you come into a stack of images - ships - from a late estate or at flea markets and you have payed for them - do you then become the owner and therefor the copy rights from them as your own?

Think you would have to ask a legal mind on that, as come into the world of patents, i would assume unless you held a patent on same they were anyone’s. The same as a derelict
is open to any salvor that’s where the misconception of the master remaining on vessel came from, he didnt stay for the good of his health. He stayed to arrange terms of salvage rights. JS

In your case with pictures you have bought and have a receipt would imagine they are yours to use as you please. JS.

I would think unless it stated on the materail (copy right protected ) it is fair game , especially if it is photgraphic images.

I may be wrong. There have been hundreds of pics posted on site of ships taken by others, but if one attributes it to that person, and don't intend making a profit out of it, it should be OK , unless the website one gets it from says otherwise.

If not mentioned as copy right then it can be used, but the owner still has the right to challenge if used in a manner such as crime.

There was a case some years ago where-in a claimant made a case that copyright for his songs and material should remain in force for 70 years after his death, he lost the case and the copyright ceased with his death or earlier if he rescinded the rights to the copyright.

Patent rights are a different thing altogether and they are infintissimal unless rescinded by the patentee for the general good of the public at large, a case in point where-in Mercedes the patentee of the seat-belt forgave its patent rights so that they could be used by any vehicle manufacturer.

From the information given it would appear that the aforementioned photographs can be used in any manner the current owner wishes, but its always wise to put in a disclaimer in a prologue or give credit to the original photographer, if known.

Des and others thank you for the response - regarding the point of hundreds of images being used - i have on occasion and more than once - come across person claiming the right " copy" or otherwise to an image but then found the same image on various shipping forums were the image is post or shared by some one else - who although they do not claim copy right - use the image - in the case of someone using an image they claim to be their own - surely their should be @ ( persons name ) on the actual foto - the internet has not made this any easier - as you can virtually download almost any image ( - i am referring to ships in this case ) - even if the owner has " block " downloading - by the simple method of using screen page .... it gets very complicated at times ......here is an example - shared by a few folk as their own but no copy right on the actual imagesBig Red Boat 111 breakers (1).jpgBig Red Boat 111 breakers (2).jpg

Sometime ago there was a man who uploaded any picture he could find to his own website.
The website was "PHOTOSHIP".
In the end he fell foul of the copyright rules and was forced to shut his website down or be sued.
There are however some copies of this website around.

good evening, there is today people whom scour the patent office records and make money, there are other people whom chase down patents and add clauses to them as refinements or additions, those same people add ethnic identities ie names to these patents, for the reason of at a later date stating that the ethnic persons named on the said patent was the official claiment and inventor why even the the edison light bulb now has a new inventor to satisfy this woke generation.

I vaguely remember a big case where a Jap car maker was using I think it was the blinker system, a bloke in the States sued them as it was his invention, I think the Jap car company paid him $ millions.Des
