#10 The American ships I was on the term would have been stateroom, so would have sounded even dafter, “ please teacher can I leave the Stateroom” . Areal fancy name for a small cabin with a tin locker , tin drawers and bereft of any charm. But fireproof as you could get it . Cheers JS .

On cruise ships all cabins a/er called state rooms, and looking in some as you pass by that term is correct.
Terrible state for the BR to deal with.

As to expansion plates on the old UCL liners, they were brass and had to be polished regularly.
But not in rough weathetr when they opened and shut and could do damage as Ginger the officers steward found out oneday crossing the bay.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
