As the title says anyone duck out paying the bill. How much grief did it cause you. One springs to mind, a barmaid from many years ago..

Do not recall such, being an almost honest man.

But there are times when the restaurant makes a mistake.
Saturday night in the local club, went to pay at the end of the night, they forgot to add the drinks bit to the final bill.
Did not notice until Sunday morning when I looked at it.

even extras !!!, i have not one debt in my life, the biggest insult you could tag me with, would be to say i don't pay my bills. I think most seamen are up front with money, the old tarpaulin muster was going strong when i was at sea,

In 68 while at college, I went aboard one of my companies vessels in Brighams drydock. As got to the bottom of the gangway someone on deck shouted my name and came running down the gangway to meet me, the Chinese bosun from my previous trip.
There were two others on board that i knew so we arranged to go out for a meal. At that time there was only one Chinese restaurant on Ocean Rd. in Shields and two Indians so they voted for the Chinese one.
As we were perusing the menu the waiter was taking an order from an adjacent table and aftr jotting it down demanded immediate payment at which these two guys protested, the waiter wouldnt budge saying "last time you here, you no pay" so the two upped it and left quickly.
Later on when I went to the toilet, which was outside in the back yard, there was the back gate nailed up and laced with barbed wire with the wall topped by fresh cement, filled with big shards of broken glass.

I think money and paying bills starts at an early life, right from pocket money days, and paper rounds etc. When i left school at 15, right from day one, gave Mum *keep* money, while at sea always left a small allowance for back home. Talking to a lot of younger parents today, it seems *keep* money has gone out of fashion, no wonder they don't want to leave home.

I still have the original $20 and $5 notes that I always kept somewhere on my person as "get me back to ship" money in case I spnt up or otherwise had no cash.

    Keith.
I never had pocket money as such; got sixpence to go to the Cinema or for an ice cream. Until I went to the Vindi always gave my mother my pay packet, got five bob to spend. sent two ponds a month when I went to sea. After all my mother looked after me for all those years.

Think it was like thta for most of us.
Pocket money just after the war was a luxury for mnay, not that much money to spare.
At the tender age of ten got some work on a pig farm for the holidays, all of ten shillings for a week.
Then a paper round, up at the crack, mof Dawn, who ever she was, and deliver in all weathers for about 12 shillings a week.
Kids today do not know they are born.

A few of us were in a bar in Barranquilla. The usual ladies sat at the table. Come time to settle up there was a surcharge tagged on to the bill. It was explained that it was for services rendered. Seeing as I did not take part in being serviced told the 2 that had that was there end of the tab to clear, hence my original post.

The two concerned did get value for the money, they had to go and see doctor Bob for a wee STD probllem.
