at lunch time our soup was a bit crunchy
The galley boy thought the cook nhad added some ingredient and stirred it up
it tasted OK until we we realised where it had comne from

I spent a few months as an instructor at the Gravesend NSTS during the early 90's sadly the school was declining along with the British fleet. To attract more business the Chief Office at the school was tasked with creating more income streams and to that end spotted a gap in the training of FRC handling and practice. So he designed a course to prep mariners to coxswain level. The FRC was run from the school jetty. One of the younger instructors ( who had delusions of grandeur, one might say) was trained as a trainer. Around this time we had received a circular (I think from the PLA) informing of the strict rules re the dumping of waste into the Thames. During a practice run the FRC trainer saw what he believed was a serious infringement of the new 'river fly tipping' regs by a small launch. He ranged alongside the offending vessel and delivered a sermon at the top of his voice on the need to stop dumping waste. Unfortunately for him the rather glum looking party of people on the launch deck were in the process of scattering ashes followed by the odd rose and posy of flowers. Our deluded trainer learned one of managements basic rules 'before issuing a verbal barracking make sure you have your facts right'
