Captain ‘Hard Nut’ Russell – what a great name.
Thomas Arthur Russell was born in Newcastle on 2 December 1889.
He enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 5 September 1911 until 4 September 1921.
He served in the MN and RNR during WWI.
He died on 9 August 1942 following an operation for a rectal ulcer at the Victoria Jubilee Infirmary, Tynemouth. He was the Master of the ss EASTON at the time.
I checked with Marian about the person she posted about, Herbert Russell, but he is not the same man that was involved with the Spanish Blockade in 1937 aboard BACKWORTH.
I found a lead in a newspaper which I don’t have access to but the headline gave me a name of Tom Russell and further research along with some records prove it to be the same man. You will see similarity in the photos of his CR 10 and this link: https://blog.twmuseums.org.uk/newcastle-foodships/
I Have other records, any questions please feel free?
Regards
Hugh
Thank goodness you found him Hugh as I was scunnered searching:p Dismissed his CR 10 photo cause his face was much thinner than the photo's of 1937. Can I ask which newspaper you got his Christian name from if I dissed that too will retire:p
Well Done:D
Hi Marian,
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Thursday 6 May 1937 - I can only see the headline.

Hugh

Cheers
Just an addition in case
Those Two Ship Numbers shown on his CR10
144912 Bombardier
143150 Suasenberg ( The number might also be 142150 in that case the Ship was the Edith )
Cheers
With reading this interesting post and with absolutely no intended disrespect for this fine man , I couldn’t help but remember the post on nicknames some time ago , where as an example the well known ones where Clark ( Nobby)
Jones ( Davie or Locker) with a name like Russel and a Height of 5’4” I wouldn’t mind betting today at least his would have been (Jack ).

Re The later lives of the Officers, 'Owen 'Corn Cob' Jones of the MacGregor, John 'Ham and Egg' Jones of the Sarastone and William Roberts of the Seven Seas Spray', will take a longer search as no dates of birth supplied. However, the link below offers a snippet re Officer William Roberts and his daughter Fifi to be going on with.

Members, may I add two more names to my list, both with the Stanhope line? They were Captain Prance of the Stanbrook in 1937 and Captain Scott of the Stancroft in 1938, the latter dying that year.
