Question Federal Steam Navigation Company (part of NZSC)

I'm seeking crew lists 1930-37 for this shipping line - and, more specifically, any information about someone who sailed with the line 1930-37 by name Michael Willmott.

    Can anyone help please?

    Hi Robin
That is a big ask , and would take a long time to get all the Crew Lists for Ship over those Years.
It would also cost you a lot of Cash outlay to even try and start.

I dont know how many Ships there would be over those Years or how many Crew Members, but at a guess i would say Hundreds upon Hundreds

    Good Luck anyway.

Where was Michael from, and do you have a Year of Birth??

Thanks very much for responding Marian.

Michael Willmott was born in 1909 in Chelsea, London. That's all I can say for certain.

Another MN fact is that he got his Master's Certificate in 1936.

He had joined the MN - Eagle Oil Transport Co. - as an Apprentice in 1926. I think he joined the FSNC in 1930. He is recorded as arriving in ss Ugon in New York on 24th March 1930 as 4th Officer in ss Devon

Michael Willmott was born in 1909 at Chelsea, London.

He did his MN apprenticeship 1926-29 with Eagle Oil Transport Co.

He joined the Federal Steam Navigation Co (part of NZ Shipping Co. since 1912) in 1930 and sailed with it to late-1936/early-1937 when he joined the R.N. Submarine service full-time.

He was awarded a DSO in WW2. He was killed in action 18.9.1942 when commanding the submarine HMS Talisman on a mission in the Med.

#5, Hello Robin. Thank you for the update, will certainly try looking re Michael's MN days. For RN records you will have to apply to the Ministery of Defence direct. Having said that. Hugh informed me this morning that the MOD are in the process of transferring all RN military records to The National Archieves at Kew and best to wait till after April 1st.

Will come back to you later today

Marian - I've now tried to read that List under a magnifying glass.

Yes, it is "my" Michael Willmott. That was a voyage he took as a passenger London-Malta to join a ship in Malta when he had just become an Apprentice at Eagle Oil Transport Co. in late-1925.

He was Michael Willmott - no other names.

Thought it might be Having said that there is a line through his name which means he did not travel for whatever reason. ..so far on Ancestry numerous entries on the pages from the UK, Navy Lists, 1888-1970 but that's not what you require! Still looking.

Do you require the submarine names too and the UK, London Gazettes World War II Military Notice, 1939-1945 or do you have those already?

Robin, For crew lists on any ships names/numbers you have use this link:

    https://www.crewlist.org.uk/

Michael is the 6th crew member down, if you can wait till after 7pm Vernon should be on site by then and can enlarge the record for you. Failing that can send by email if you wish. Just noticed the ship name is obscured top of page, vessel is the ''DEVON'' Any others in no particular order.

That's all Ancestry has to offer the following is from FMP:

Newspaper excerpt from the ''Gloucester Citizen 13 May 1942'' is too large for site - can send that too by email?
