Some documents - source, HM Ships sunk by Enemy Action.
The submarine certainly had a busy war and was even depth charged by Sunderland a/c from the RAF. This apparently was a risk that Lt.Cdr. Willmott was aware could happen and it did.

Other accounts state the submarine hit an enemy mine.
Maybe this could be enlarged Vernon?

Re: Federal Steam Navigation Company (part of NZSC)
I'm overwhelmed! Thank you both, Marian Gray & Doc Vernon, so much. It has saved me a lot of work and a trip to the Caird Library which, I gather, has NZSC crew lists (inc. FSNC) for the period.
Yes, I have much material re Willmott's RN career in submarines. A genuine war hero.
An article on Michael Willmott will appear somewhere later this year and I'll let you know when/where.
Many thanks indeed

This is the war memorial in Kingshill, Bucks with Michael Willmott's name on it. In November, with his daughter and grandson, we will be laying a wreath in his memory on Remembrance Sunday.
We now have Michael's confidential record from the MoD (a minor miracle!) and I have lots of information from the National Archives.
One last question: Is there a list anywhere of MN officers becoming Master Mariners? Willmott became one in either 1935 or 1936 according to a reference in his old school magazine.
Re: Federal Steam Navigation Company (part of NZSC)
One for Hugh's expertise I should think Robin, possibly included in the UK Navy Lists, 1888-1970 mentioned in my #9, if Hugh confirms then I will go through them...Keep looking in.:)

Hi Marian,
Not in this case as the Navy List is only for Royal Navy officers. I think Robin is asking for information prior to him joining the RN and specifically when he was a Master Mariner and where the lists are held and in this case he needs to check Lloyd's Captains Register (1911-1948) contact the London Metropolitan Archives, details here:
https://search.lma.gov.uk/scripts/mw...MMARY_RG#coll2
For some reason that link won't open when I copy it - try here and search in the box for Lloyds Captains Register - https://search.lma.gov.uk/scripts/mw...uage=144&file=[WWW_LMA]home.html
Here is a pdf file - https://search.lma.gov.uk/rg_pdf_cre...earch_guide=72

Many thanks Hugh, did wonder if it was beyond any access that I subscribe to.:)
Re: Federal Steam Navigation Company (part of NZSC)
Thank you Hugh - & Marian,
Yes, Hugh is correct - it is the MN list (not RN) that I'm trying to track down. Will try the Lloyds Captains Register and report back!
