Ships logs
Is it possible to view a ships log from the 1960's.
I'm looking for the log of the Temple Main during 1965.
I worked on her as a Ordinary Seaman and the voyage took us around the world.

Re: Ships logs
Hi Bryan,
Logbooks are all over the place after 1950.
A 10% sample of all logbooks are held at the Public Record Office, in classification (BT 99 Agreements and Crew Lists, Series II). 80% of the records are now held at the Maritime History Archive, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, A1C 5S7. The remaining 10% of these logbooks and crew agreements are kept at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, SE10 9NF. This last address keeps the years ending in "5", i.e. 1955, 1965, 1975.
So, the TEMPLE MAIN's Official Logbooks for the years ending in 5 should be held at the National Maritime Musuem. You should contact them giving the ship's name and official number - TEMPLE MAIN, 187760. Bear in mind that the logbook is a large document with a tabular and a narrative section which also should hold the Crew Agreements and covers the whole year.
If the ship did not get back to a UK port until 1966 then the logbook will not be held there. Luckily, There is a Crew Agreement [one of the 10%] for 1966 held at Kew in piece BT 99/5665 whether there is a surviving logbook, I don't know. Hope that helps.
Regards
Hugh

Re: Ships logs
It is the Official Log Book you are looking for isn’t it.? The OLB doesn’t have information of all happenings on a ship.
E.g. it probably would not have Smith punched Brown in the eye today at 1005 hrs. You might find such information in the deck log however in case of future complications. The deck and Engine Room logs were the property of the owner , but would have to be handed to a court of Enquiry in the likes of a collision as would have more pertinent information than the OLB l
Depends what you are seeking . However as said the ordinary log books were the property of the owner . The OLB was a government document and kept for records by the MOT or whatever authority was in power at the time . You could say the OLB was just that and contained the entries required by the proper Authority , the deck and engine room logs were 3 month diaries. Filled in of all happenings at sea every 4 hours .JS

She is very helpful and the MUN do hold a vast amout of UK logbooks, many from 1951 - 1976 have not yet been indexed but she will only direct you to the National Maritime Museum for years ending in 5 because they don't hold those years.
To view (or order a copy of) crew lists, agreements and official logs held by the National Maritime Museum, Caird Library and Archives, please email the library team library@rmg.co.uk who will create a manual request on your behalf. Please provide: the name of the ship, the year of the voyage and the official number. [From their own website].

Hugh
