    Default weather news

Who like me is sick and tired of hearing about the so called heat wave here in the UK. Yes I am sure it will be uncomfortable for a few days down South. It is not rocket science on how to protect yourselves in warm weather. Certainly not for the likes of us ex seafarers. Are people really that stupid now that they do not know to keep themselves well hydrated.I suppose there will be idiots walking about or sitting in the beer garden with Taps Aff drinking umpteen pints of Stella is the best way to remain hydrated, not that we ever did that at sea lol.

Train companies are putting on speed restrictions because the rails may buckle A lot of tracks are solid lengths and welded together. Here is an interesting video clip on the welding process. https://youtu.be/5uxsFglz2ig . I wonder how they fair in other countries that really do have hot weather, Ah well at least it is not leaves on the tracks are the reasons for train delays and cancellations. When are ASLEF calling for strike action? If I was them I would call off any strikes until after the heat wave, they will still get paid for sitting at home because the train companies have had to cancel services due to buckled tracks

Nanny state or what!!! who remembers the summer 1976 or 2006 was another warm one.

in 76 we had similar temps for 15 consecutive days and we managed then so no reason not to today, its the papers as usual hyping things up. As for rails buckling, in hot countries the rails have already done some expansion as it was more likely to be hot when laid, whereas here it may have been significantly colder when laid, however they are supposed to calc. all these factors when designing the track before laying.

All steel expands and contracts with temperature that’s why usually expansion pieces are put into a steel structure. My previous house I had built. I specified I wanted only steel beams in the roof space before went back to sea. Unfortuanetley due to building regulations this meant a different camber on the roof as the builders assumed I wanted a steal or commonly known a tin roof on. I didnt as had specified a tile roof on the plans. That’s the trouble with some they assume too much. They had to devise a method of putting a tile roof on a steel structure costing them money not me . However in the hot summers we have out here the roof used to give short crack noises when cooling down at night. Whoever bought the house must have found out the hard way and hope he wasn’t entertaining a lady friend at the wrong moment ,however had no complaints ,at least he won’t get ants in the rafters ,maybe in the pants, but that’s his problem.Being a young fellah he’ll handle that OK .Cheers JS

Well Vernon all depends how you view it.

According to news yesterday such odd weather is not unusual after an La Nina effect.
As close ago as 2020 we had some very cold weather in January and early Feb here in Melbourne, then a glorious March and April.

According to the 'weathermen' who are supposed to know about this stuff normal conditions for the east coast will return early next week.
Currently Brissy and most of WA are in the middle of a heat wave.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Yes Vernon, snow here above 1500 meters ,not unusual but there have been such before way back in early 20th century.
Only seen snow twice here in Melbourne and only for a few hours.
But only 50 klm up the road from us they often get some in winter, high ground.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
