    hi john sabourn #80
good morning, Whilst many years ago i was educated to the fact that if you want to see what the girl your thinking of marrying will look like or become, just look at the mother, luckly i was always impressed by my mother-in-law as a woman and a person, and that also includes my wife.
ive been lucky, i would not have lasted if she had turned out shovelling iron ore around kitchen its bad enough when she shouts at me.

In 1992 My wife and I were backpacking in Poland.* We took a chance and went by ferry to Kaliningrad, Russia.* It was a time of much confusion in the newly liberated countries like Poland, Slovakia, Czech*Republic*etc. So, we took the ferry from Gdansk to Kaliningrad.*

We presented our passports to the border guard who then asked for our visas.* We told him the Russian travel office in Gdansk told us they were out of visa forms, and we could obtain them here in Kaliningrad. After not too much arguing the officer gave us a visa. I can only surmise that it was the time of great confusion in Russia with Gorbachev issuing drastic changes almost daily that the guard*said screwitski and issued us a visa.

We had traveled all over Europe many times and been to East Germany and Berlin shortly after the Wall came down and the Russia, we saw was the poorest, drabbest place we had seen.* We spent six weeks in Turkey and Turkey was light years ahead of Russia. Even East Berlin and Eastern Europe had better living conditions than what we saw in Kaliningrad, and it was ranked as one of the top living spots in all of Russia, due to its large and busy seaport.

We were not on a catered tour, with top rate guides, seeing what the government wants you to see, and staying in hotels that have a star and serve western food,*we were on our own.* We took a cab to the train station. We wandered through the concourse, and I found a tourist office, I speak reasonable German and Spanish, German was the most common second language there, so I had no problem.* We hired a guide (who spoke English), who had a car and driver, it was about ten dollars US a day to the Travel Agency.

I told the guide, forget about the churches, cathedral and the old palaces, we've seen hundreds of them and are churched out, we want to see where and how the people lived, food shops, the markets, everyday things that make up the life of ordinary Russians.* I have a photo in my collection of a shop window display...one of each sock in red, blue, green and white.* I asked the guide why only one sock of each color, "Because the window would be broken, and the socks snatched." was the answer. I asked for a restaurant for lunch (same rules, no other tourists, just Russians).* She took us to a restaurant, it was perfect, just what we wanted to visit (no hamburgers on the menu) she told us she and the driver would be back for us in an hour. I told her we thought she and the driver were going to have lunch with us as our guest.* They changed their minds in a hurry and came in with us.* We had borscht, veal cutlet and jello for dessert.* She told me that that was the first meal they had ever had in a sit down and tablecloth restaurant. I forget what it cost but it was peanuts.

She told us how much she earnt, it was about $16.00 a month and the driver made $12.00 a month.* We had them drive us around the countryside*visiting different villages while we were there.**Now we had done that in most of the countries we visited, to see the real countries as well as the interesting*museums and historical sites of course.*

Anyway, when it was time to go back to Poland, we gave them $20.00 for her and $15.00 for the driver, they both damn near fainted as it was more than a month's salary to them.* The driver took us back to his flat, but couldn't call it*an apartment, just an oversized closet.* Anyway he gave me a three foot by six-foot Soviet hammer and sickle flag that came off a Soviet destroyer and he said as a souvenir " We don't need this rag anymore."

In closing, on entering and leaving Kaliningrad we passed the quays alongside dozens of naval vessels, some submerged, some listing to either side, all vessels, mainly destroyers or frigates drastically in need of repair or scrapped.* I took photos, but in my hurry to change film in my 35mm camera, I screwed up in putting the film in and lost that roll through my carelessness.

    Cheers, Rodney

Rodders, having been to St Petersburg and seen how they live i can understand your comments.
The people did appear to be quite normal walking by the river at night.
But the housing was what caught my eye.
Massive buildings where I was told there are six to each apartment, but they may be unknown to each other and from different trades, the ones in charge say who will go where and who with.

Latest news from the front, so many men are attempting to leave there is a 12 mile long queue of vehicles trying to get into Georgia.
Conscript's are being given rusty K47 as weapons, some showing them on TV.

Maybe a bit off thread but over the years I have been in a number of Russian ports. The first as 2nd mate on a brand new product tanker where loading in ventspils and Klaipeda on its maiden voyage, bloody dire place and freezing cold, only place you could go ashore was the seaman's mission but you had to be back on board by midnight due to the curfew in place. Guard at the bottom of the gangway shut down on the stroke of midnight leaving the 3rd engineer stranded at the bottom of the gangway, I was on watch at the time and went down the gangway to protest to the guard and allow him onboard, only to have a rifle pointed at me. It took us ages to get the agent down and get the guard to allow him back on board. The next time as mate, on a geared bulker discharging grain in Odessa , this before Ukraine gained independence, we were free to ashore without restriction but on walking around town most shops were almost empty of any goods and if they did have anything on display it was old and dusty. The mission organised a night out to the opera House to see the ballet, the building was fantastic and strangely enough all the guys who went thoroughly enjoyed it. A day or so later the mission organised a beach Barbie for the lads which they were all looking forward to having seen lots of nubile topless girls on the beach nearby, only to be disappointed to be taken to a deserted private beach.
In stolt tankers we took caustic soda to Kaliningrad in mid winter, again freezing cold with locals ice fishing on the ice covering the lagoon just inside the entrance from the Baltic, some of the lads went ashore and found the place full of bars and strip clubs.
The huge naval base just by the Baltic entrance had lines of missile cruisers line up but only one would be having heating steam to be provided by the shore to it, the rest would be frozen up. I had a Danish chief mate and he said it wasn't the missile cruisers that frightened the Scandinavian countries but the huge hovercrafts that could land an amoured platoon complete with tanks etc. on a beach in Scandinavia before the national forces could react.

When in St Petersburg we were allowed ashore in tours, not on your own.
But we were allowed into shops and other places without any trouble.
Always bottles of vodka and glasses there to help your self.

In the evening we went to see a local folk show, music and dancing not bad.
Again all the grog, Vodka and Champagne, of some kind.

But coming back to the ship was odd, no lights in buildings, no street lights any where, in total darkness.
No one on the streets either and this at about 2230 hours.

Pipe line explosions, some experts are saying the Russians may have used a submarine to attack the Nord stream pipe lines. More likely they sent a PIG down the line with an explosive device attached.

Why would the Russians want to blow up the pipe line, when they control the shut off valves.?. The USA is the most likely ones responsible as they can not wait to cause more mayhem in Europe and start world war three so there economy can thrive

    hi colin #87
good afternoon, considering the great and good and all mighty of the socialist ideology and green adgenda, and whom professes to be of irish stock when in fact his family roots are in sussex uk, ( joe biden ) the esteemed president of the estados unidos de america.
is actually on record making a statement that they would stop the flow of gas, i therefore believe like you that it is highly unlikely that russia would cut off this money tree.

All will be revealed when they send down a submersible to survey the damage. If it is found to have been an explosion put your money on sabotage by the russians as they have used a P I G with an explosive device attached. If there are signs of an implosion well it is obviously an act of sabotage by the russians as they never thought of using a P I G.

I can't believe you guys are serious in stating that it would be in the interest of the US to consider starting WW lll. What is to gain? It would be the destruction of Moscow , St. Petersburg, and a slew of other cities. The destruction of Washington D.C, NYC, L.A. and a slew of other cities; London, Liverpool, Glasgo, Cardiff, etc. Paris, etc, Berlin, etc. Warsaw, etc, and etc. etc.

World war lll is the end for Biden, Putin, and every world leader as well as countless leaders, followed by world starvation and more death to the survivors when the last missile is lobbed.

The fact that the US and Russia have countess missiles, so does a number of countries in the nuclear club, who will join in. Do you think the UK is going to sit on the side lines? They will get a dozen or so 6 minutes before the USA gets theirs.

As for where Biden great grandpa was born, I could care less, if you remember Trump was insisting that Obama was born in Kenya and not where his birth certificate said Hawaii, USA, and a load of idiots in my country and yours believed it was Kenya, and probably still do. Even though it was wishful thinking as if it was true he could not run for president. The president has to be US born.

Jeez...What bloody crap next. If nonsense like this keeps up, I'm going to join the exodus.

A stunned, Rodney and no bloody cheers
