    Default CRS10 - Character Abbreviations

    Hi,

I recently received a copy of my grandad's CRS10 from the National Archives. In the "character" column, there are some abbreviations (usually in red) which I can't find the meaning of.

    They are:
    FTJ (or possibly FTS)
    VNC
    DFS (or possibly DFJ)

Can anyone tell me what these abbreviations mean?

    Thanks

Yes.VNC = Voyage Not Completed-'jumped ship',or usually hospitalized due to sickness or injury.
    FTJ or FTS ??

DFS or DFJ ?-Could it be DBS ? = Distressed British Seaman-often goes after a previous VNC entry ,when the seaman is repatriated back to the UK on a British ship after his hospitalization,or in wartime, after his own ship is lost. Distressed doesn't necessarily mean he was crying and 'in a right state'Cry.gif ,but it means temporarily displaced from his usual calling,-of course !

FTJ and FTS never heard of, but maybe could have been Forgot to Join or Forgot to Sail if wanting to make a joke of it ? Or more in perspective replace forgot with Failed . JS

Those acronyms could have other translations - depending on the captains frame of mind at the time.

You could be right Tony, FTJ might have been from a pi$%ed off skipper about a seaman, Failed To Jump.
