Then there was the TV host here who referred to the QM when in port as a' boat'.

There people ashore who have no idea what a knot is, seen some on cruise ships as we go down the bay to the open sea.
There are signs along the way informing all shipping that there is a 5 know speed limit in the bay.

On one such cruise on deck about half way down the bay a passenger I was speaking to could not understand why we had to go so slow.
Explaining was not easy, he could not grasp the difference between a mile and a knot.

Strange that the knot does not seem to be decimalised , so we talk of a ship measured speed in knots, travelling over depth of water measured in metres, all i suppose to make navigation more complicated !!. there again, today its all push button stuff i expect. what a difference, when i was at school we were not allowed calculators , all had to be shown by longhand and formulae, .

Think I saw the first calculator on a ship about 1972 it belonged to the master who had bought it in Singapore and not cheap by any means. I borrowed it and henceforth was forever used when making out the overtime sheets. JS

The BBC constantly refer to places within the UK as being so many kilometres from A to B, and proceeded at a speed of kph as far as I am aware all our speed limits are still in mph and distances given in miles

I noticed last time in the uk that the hire cars we had , the speedometer was in both. Here in Australia all the cars I have had over the past 30 years have only been in kilometres . All the road signs speed limits and distances here are in kilometres also. JS

That's because more people take their cars abroad since the 60's when ferry travel became easier, money restrictions were lifted (remember the £50 maximum) and then the chunnel made Continental so much easier. THe BBC and its left wing haven't given up the fight to get us back in the EU and are of course very anti-Govt now with the free money pot Licence fee being frozen for two years and rumoured to cease altogether in 2027

(for those non-nautical only 2B pencils could be used on charts, unless you wanted the sack of course)
