Re: Anyone Know?
P&O SS Aden ex Somerset launched 1945 I was deckboy spent 6 weeks in KG 5 updating running gear from single wire lift 5 ton derricks to top double sheave block 10ton derricks all winches had to be upgraded as all bases rusted out. The photo is in Auckland where all shrouds were undone from the rear mast as we had a dozen full horse boxes around 4 and 5 hatch WHICH the shoreside crane removed. Shoreside crew came on board to remove the surplus fodder left in No.5 hatch using the ships derricks without replacing the mast shrouds.

Re: Anyone Know?
After the demasting which killed the foreman the foremast was exrayed and found to have a crack in that immediately all derricks downgraded from 10t swl. to 5t swl. The day we arrived in the local papers we were the P&O Cargo Liner SS Aden as we bought out some valuable sculpture. The following day it read The Tramp Ship Aden etc. We were moved to Princess pier to discharge cargo where the funeral cortege left in boats 3 days later as the gentleman lived on one of the distant islands. Very sombre day

Re: Anyone Know?
Hi Michael.
The same thing happened on a ship I was on, the Basford, in St Johns in Canada. The mate had taken all the stays down to allow the wharfies to load logs on deck with a shore crane, but they were still using the derricks aft, one bloke got a broken leg. They cut the mast off and we rigged a jury one.
