    Hi Graham,
I was so hoping that the signal flags could identify the ships owners, a date for when the Airlie was painted on the inside of the sea chest's lid and then by a process of elimination provide a date for Edward Coleman being on the vessel. I don't know if it may be of help but the Belgium artist John Henry Mohrmann did a painting of the Airlie called the 'Airlie at Sea'. Maybe he painted the picture of the ship the Airlie on the inside of Edward's sea chest lid! It is quite a detailed painting after all! Many thanks Neil

    Hi Keith,
Desperately trying to change the PDF to a JPEG! I'm afraid it's not happening. Could anyone please send Keith the images of the signal flags as a JPEG. The information that the forum has so far provided are fantastic. Many thanks Neil.

The four-flag fly will not identify the owners, it is the ship's identification signal allocated to that ship under its current name at the time of them being flown. The four-flag will change if the vessel's name is changed, it will not indicate the owners, that is ascertained from knowing the vessel's name. Has as already been noted the flags are NSRJ and British ships always began with G or M.

It will not do as you say Ivan it it will indicate its nationality however, which it’s ensign should also do . In my era of British Shipping I was always on ships beginning with G , the only one I. Particularly remember was GRDF my first one the Avonmoor . JS

A lot of people rely on funnel markings to identify a vessels owners. To the best of my knowledge there is no legal binding for any shipowner to have one. I even made one up for one particular owner . I would have thought the only legality of such was if the owner had taken out a patent on the insignia where the rights of ownership would have applied. There was a case. In our time between Blue Star line and Newcastle brown ale at one time never did find out how far it went. There are still many ships with a just plain black funnel. JS.

The law about flying an ensign is still there but is often ignored and the law does in most cases does not follow up with the punitive fines , which they should , and the fines increased to match today’s cost of living. JS
