Re: Sea chest and painting information request
Hi Marian,
Edward (coal whipper) and Abby, 5 Back Road were Edward Coleman's parents. The 'Forty Elephants' (an all women gang) were from Elephant & Castle, South of the Thames, from the 1900's. The 'Forty Thieves' were North of the Thames from 1830 - 1900.
Please carry on investigating Marian, especially as regards to the flag signals in the sea chest. Many thanks Neil

Re: Sea chest and painting information request
Hi Marian,
I cannot believe that you posted this at 3.43 am! Thank you so much! Any information on this notorious merchant sailor is not only important to me but I believe that it will be important to people everywhere when the documentary is made. Do you happen to have any thoughts on the signal flags in the painting of the Airlie? Maybe if they disclose the company he worked for! So grateful Neil

Re: Sea chest and painting information request
Hi Marian,
Do you think that E Coleman, First Mate on the Coolgardie has a registered seaman's number? I noticed on a newspaper article about the Coolgardie the ships Captain was stated as W Knight. I believe that a W Knight was Captain of the Airlie. All the best Neil

Re: Sea chest and painting information request
Hi Doc and Marian,
I very much appreciate the link. Unfortunately I am terrible when it comes to working my way around these websites. But from what I can see there sadly is no Edward Coleman.

Re: Sea chest and painting information request
#22 Have just seen the signal flags Marian and can’t make them All out but it looks like a 4 flag hoist assuming the top red flag is the ensign . Think the first flag looks like N , and would assume is the ships name or letters as on her registry and if so most British ships of that era begin with G. Will have another look when can find a Magnifying glass. JS
Marian the call sign is NSRJ that is the ships name in the flags , would not be British , as most in that era would have been G probably followed by R , and two more letters. The flags may of course be just the Artists licence to put what he felt like .Cheers JS.
My guess would be Norwegian or the Nederlands ( Dutch) .

I agree that there could be artistic licence there John. We know that four figure call signs of course for GB were G ,then later M prefixed.
However,re our subject,N was actually USA, whilst the Netherlands had P prefix, and Norway had J and L......
