Re: no name
My father was on the 'Galway' from 02.07.1966 until 17.07.1969, he would have been there during the lengthening, liked that ship, he was born in Galway. Pat Geurrier was the Captain, I sailed with Pat when he was 2/m in the 50's

Re: no name
Certainly wont argue the toss here , but i think that the Galway is another Ship that looks like the one Posted?
On the following site it shows the Owner History and Pics , but there is no mention of her with Safmarine ??
As said not arguing just trying to get this correct!
Thanks
Motor Vessel GALWAY built by Smith's Dock Company Ltd. in 1959 for Avenue Shipping Co. (Trinder, Anderson & Co.), London, Cargo

Re: no name
Thanks Vic Just trying to establish if and when she was in Safmarine Colours.
As she was lengthened could the accommodation have been changed as well??
If so may be the reason for the difference there ??
As far as i can establish the Ship Galway was never with Safmarine ?? But ??
Going from the list the one built
the 59 one
Avenue Sg Co.Ltd changed names 75 STRATHINVER - 76 GOLDEN FORTUNE
later 59
Peninsular and Oriental Shipping Co
STRATHINVER - IMO 5125788 - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker
Strathinver 1959 ex- Galway, 1972 transferred from Avenue Shipping Co, 1975 renamed Strathinver, 1976 sold to Singapore renamed Golden Fortune. 7,167

Re: no name
Doc, when lengthened she would have gained an additional hold, (on the foredeck) which would require additional derricks which in turn would need an additional mast and mast house to support the running gear (topping lifts etc) to operate the said derricks. so when built she had two masts on the foredeck after lengthening she had three masts on the foredeck. There would be no need to alter the accommodation as there would be no increase in crew requirements.
When a ship goes on charter, the owners remain the owners, and the charterers become what is known as the disponent owners, being responsible for arranging only the ports of call and the cargoes carried, and in some cases (not all) responsible for arranging bunkers but using the owners suppliers, unless they are shipowners themselves, in which case the disponent owners would use their bunker suppliers. Safmarine chartered in additional vessels (as did many other companies) from other shipowners using their surplus vessels to operate on their (Safmarine) regular trades, the disponent owners (Safmarine) would as part of the Charter Party ask the original owners (Avenue) to paint the funnel, and sometimes the hull in Safmarine colours, at safmarines costs, so that shippers and consignees would know that their cargoes were under the control of Safmarine and not some third party they had no dealings with.
The disponent owners (Safmarine) would not be shown as ever owning the 'Galway'
Hope this helps solve your confused.

Re: no name
Vernon,
This may or may not help.
The GALWAY had two sisters, the ANTRIM and the DONEGAL.
On looking at the ships in our gallery ,there is no mention of either being in Safmarine ownership.
You might like to confim this.
Thankyou.

Re: no name
#28 None of Trinder Andersons (Avenue Shipping) vessels were owned by Safmarine, if you read #26 you may see clarification of why this particular vessel was wearing Safmarine colours.
It was, and still is, common practice for shipowners to take other owners vessels on long term charter and have the funnel and hull painted in the charterer's colours, mostly just the funnel, as changing colour of the hull and then repainting it again at the end of the charter is an expensive business. In a lot of cases the disponent owners don't even bother changing the funnel, but just supply a Company House Flag for the vessel to fly whilst under the the disponent owners control.
I will not go into further detail on various types of vessel charters on this thread, being aware of your dislike of threads going off subject, although in all honesty I think this and #26 have a relevance to the subject vessel.

Re: no name
If you study the image, you will note that the Hull colour appears to be grey, Safmarine hull colours were white with a green boot topping.
Which indicates she was on charter.
