#11 Foremast Mainmast Mizzenmast After Mizzenmast.
Alternatively to an aid to memory, Foreplay Mainplay where the hell is it 1, and where the hell is it 2.

The term Samson post always intrigued me when I first learned as a youngster. Always brought up visions of Delilah . Was there ever any article of ships equipment titled a Delilah ? I can’t recall any.

Sampson posts were inherently strong, easier to maintain, had fewer stays than a mast, never as high as a mast. A lot of yankee ships had a forest of sampson posts rather than masts, only having a foremast and mainmast.

The word sampson, was spelt samson on yankee vessels.

#13 Used to be one of my favourite songs Oh Delilah sung by Frankie Lane especially in the girlie bars in Japan on the jukebox. Cappy they say used to dance with his girlfriend to it, the one with the whiskers that is . JS

#14 Masts when you think about it were necessary to carry sails, and after sails navigation lights and flags, otherwise could improvise with Samson posts As regards the spelling get used to one or the other. Sailing with foreign crews they tend to go either way. The same as bottle screw the American term is turning buckle. JS

Thanks Mike , I googled her after you supplied her name what company was she built for. Was she an NZ shipping? here is a photo of her as the Galway.
Galway.jpg. She looks like a proper ship compared to modern day vessels.

The Galway was lengthened in 1967.
Built by Smiths Dock, 1958, for Avenue Shipping Co. (Trinder Anderson& Co., managers), London.
