Hi Ivan, I agree that there is not much communication between generations however, I think this has always been so and will continue to be so. Even though I served in the Royal Navy for 11 + years in the 1960's it was and is a pivotal part of my life so I never miss the opportunity to share my wisdom (?) and memories with my son in law and grandchildren. But I also want to know what they are doing or have done in their lives.
I was having my customary Sunday evening scotch/rum or whatever at my daughters home when Imogen (aged 14) came into the room. She was wearing AWD (no 8's we called it - Light blue shirt and dark blue trousers)
"I've joined the Navy Cadets at school granddad"
Tears filed my eyes. Who needs words???
Marian, I do a bit of genealogy myself - much prefer the female line.
My wife has a clipping from the Liverpool Echo from 1958 which reports the death of her grandfather, Samuel Prince, aged 85 or 86. It also says that he was the last Captain of a sailing ship out of Liverpool. That's all the information she has.
Thanks Marion, I don't think this is the right one. My wife seems to think he came from Ireland. Samuel's wife's name was Ada Louisa Codman (Professor Codman of Punch & Judy fame family) She was 20 or 30 years younger than Samuel.
Just had another look at the document, looking at Victory, Hawke, Pembroke, Scylla, Ganges, Devonport, Portsmouth, Chatham etc. All seem to relate to Royal Navy shore establishments rather than Merchant Navy
WE have traced much of our family tree, use the Latter Day Saints geneology site which is very good.
But it is quite amazing how much of what I was told about the family is way off the mark.
Mainly in the areas of employment and where they lived according to census.
I think stories go down the generations and get a bit twisted along the way.
But we have established for sure that there is a connection to Barrats the Sweet people on my paternal grandmothers side, R, Whites lemonade on my maternal aunts side and Black and White Whisky on my maternal grandfathers side.
Not that I got any thing from them, tight A*** buggers the lot of them.
Wow! Thanks for this Marion. I'd be interested to know where you got the ship information from as I can't make out some of the writing or categories. I have just done a search on the web and found a sailing ship Dunboyne which might ring true. :-D
I only have a transcript of minimum information from the 1939 register. Your screenshot and transcript is more helpful. I love the competency certificate.
Really interesting and thanks again.
