This is the Link to his Seamans Pouch , however as you do have his Discharge Book it would have all his Ships in there.
You may want to also apply for his CRS10 as that will hold all his Sea Service Records , which may help ,but that is up to you.
As i had said , as for the Ships and where they went you need to contact the Guildhall Library London, for the Voyage Record Cards.
    Best of luck.

    Hi Mark
His CRS10 if applicable is his Record of his full Sea Service which holds everything .
It is always best to get that in place of the Seamans Pouch which only holds Basic Info, when you join up.
At the moment am not sure as to the National Archives situation Mark, as they were closed at one time for Records that were not yet Digitised.
As i recall they did reopen for online applications a little while back, then again closed, so you would just have to see how things are now??
If you open the Link you should see Request this Document, then just follow the Prompts! Must tell you though that i think the Online requests are only being done at Week Ends, so as to catch up on their very long backlogs!
It is also possibly though that he may have a CR10 not the CRS10 , in that case you will have to apply to the Southampton Maritime Archive Section in their Original Forms.
I will look up the CRS10 Link a bit later and post here, and that is the same format as applying for any other Document, except that you will have to make sure you ask for only His records, as the CRS10 contains a number of names in each Series. So to start i think best to apply for the CRS10 and see what they come up with.

Any more questions just ask please!
    Cheers

Don't recall them being treated badly when i sailed with them, i was JOS with one, who was a nice enough guy, but was on a lot more money than myself, had not done the sea time that i had, ie 9months deck boy, 9 months JOS, before i was promoted SOS, he was not allowed aloft, or over the side on stages, which i was for less money, not that i did not enjoy working aloft, or over the side, but just resented the money side, ie less beer coupons, kt

As far as I can remember it depended on the individual. It wasn’t a matter of not being allowed aloft or over the side it was when they used that themselves for not wanting to do it. They were on about 10/- a month less than an AB , and and ordinary seaman came higher in the manning scale for the vessel than a DHU. A lot of aggro was self inflicted in some cases by the individual themself. The rating itself was brought out by the government for usually ex. National servicemen of a more senior age who probably had more responsibilities than younger people, but like all systems with good intentions it got abused in a lot of cases. I had one DHU with me when I was mate in 1963 , he thought he knew the rule book and refused to go on a stage as said he wasnt qualified , think. The deckboy jumped in at the chance. Fortuanetley didn’t have to carry him for very long as was a running Agreement . All hands and the cook wanted rid of him. However there were others who appreciated the work and had the personality to mix with more experienced people. JS
