Taking that question 60 years ago the answer would probably have been 1 at the most. A ship was a 3 or 4 masted vessel square rigged on at least 3. So being awkward the answer for most would be none today. But the term ship has disappeared out of the dictionary and is given as a vessel which floats in water. JS

Well John. REED'S Ship construction for Marine Students. It gives eight types of ships. Passenger, Cargo Liners, Cargo Tramps, Oil Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Colliers, Container, & Liquefied Gas Carrier. Is this what you had in mind?

Well there were two types, good ships and hard ships which many went through over the years.
As for the alcohol out of the compass, only knew of one who drank it, but must have been it all as the compass failed.

Then with our dearly beloved Cappy there were only two types, the good ones and the ones that Mary was on, and at one time he thought she was good looking.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

No correct answers so far but Bill could have been on the right track but his book was on construction, regulation is different.

All general cargo except for one lovely passenger ship, the SS Rajula. Twin triple expansion, 5 Scotch boilers and built in 1926. Long run between Madras and Singapore and back to Madras.
