    Default coastal schooner

    Wapama

She is a 204 foot wooden schooner, 40 feet across with 2 masts. She has a 825 hp triple expansion steam engine and could carry 1 million board feet of lumber. She also carried as many as 45 first-class passengers, 22 more in steerage, and about 19 crew members.

Could this ship, a coastal schooner, sail the open pacific ocean?

Of course she could , as long as enough bunkers and fresh water and a star to steer her by. JS

She is a bit small. A spinning top in heavy weather for sure. However, it will have an excentric captain with a loyal crew. Once at the island she will just do short runs.

No reason why not, just flatten those derricks first though and improve on your seamanship, the way the flying derricks are stowed needs some improvement with the hook of the union purchase attached to a strop rather than the the deck. I think my first trawler out to the Arctic was shorter than that. Thor Hayedal's was even shorter!

#3... it’s not the size that counts , admit to that and you”Il never hear the last of it. I’ve always felt more comfortable in a smaller vessel than these big monstroverstys of big masses of steel. The noise itself of their working in a bad weather scenario is enough to give one goose pimples . Small and easy does it all the time JS.

Talking about bum steers , wonder how many seamen and all those who did hours on lookout remember sitting on the breast hook to take the weight off their legs and have a snooze, and. Wondered why they had to answer the wheelhouse bells every half an hour and report the navigation lights. To Frank and his book is better to have a smattering of nautical terms of a ship , the following few just to keep the reader awake and wondering the not too hard ones maybe...Breasthook, Tumblehome , Garboard Strake, Sheer Strake, Deck Camber. Ships Scantlings, enough for any landlubber to start with. JS
