    Default R.N.Transport Service

A distant ancestors marriage certificate dated August 16 1916 shows the husbands "Rank or profession" as Chief Steward R. N. Transport Service , age 26

His name is William Henry Renshaw and he may have been born in the Wirral about 1890.

Can anyone enlighten me what the R. N. Transport Service was. and were its crews merchant navy?

the only thing I have found on line is a record from the National Archives catalogue of a record from the National Maritime Museum: The Caird Library and Archive

    Reference BT 400 /3478/23
Description Ship Creole Prince; Official number 101827

a detailed crew list by rank/rating follows including

W H Renshaw; rank/rating, Chief Steward ; age 27 place of birth West Kirby; previous ship, same

date is not clear but may be 1915.

Any enlightenment as to what I have found would be welcome, especially a source for a full record of sea service including any post 1918

    Thanks

His previous Ship was the same , that is as the one Shown.

The Ship Creole Prince was a Cargo built 1893 .
Looks like he was Merchant Navy . will have to look into this and see.

On October 22nd, 1916, the British steel cargo ship CREOLE PRINCE, built in 1893 by Short Brothers Ltd. and owned at the time of her loss by Prince Line Ltd., on voyage from Melbourne to Mediterranean with general cargo, sank after a collision in the straits of Gibraltar.

The Royal Naval Transport Service (RNTS) was established on 1st December 1916. Officers were appointed to serve as Naval Transport Officers in ports in the UK and abroad. They supervised the transport of troops and equipment to the various theatres of war and they were stationed in the various ports of embarkation/disembarkation.

The ranks of Officers in the RNTS (and their equivalent rank in the Royal Navy) were Principal Naval Transport Officer (if a Flag Officer, the rank he held; otherwise Commodore 2nd Class), Divisional Naval Transport Officer (Captain), Transport Officer, 1st grade (Commander, unless already of higher rank when he retained that rank), Transport Officer, 2nd grade (Lieutenant-Commander), Transport Officer, 3rd grade (Lieutenant) and Transport Officer, 4th grade (Sub-Lieutenant). These appointments were open to 'Retired, Emergency, and Temporary Officers.'

    Cheers

For his Sea Service Records you will have to look at the CRS10 or CR10 Records the first at the National Archives , and second at the Archives of Southampton in their original Series,
Its a long road but with patience you can get ther as have others!

    Good luck
