The. way of ships staff testing was to put a lifeboat compass above or below ,usually above as no room below the guard over the pipe contains the cable, when the engineers switched the gerenerator on the compass card should swing 180 degrees, if it didn’t fings weren’t right. This was and is my total knowledge. JS
