    Default Texaco Southampton

    Dear Shipmates:

I am researching (for "fun") tug and tow salvage claims. I have started with the Londonderry registered, Minnehaha, a three masted sailing ship which got into difficulties on the approaches to Liverpool (Crosby Channel) in 1861.
Tugs were engaged and a strongly contested salvage claim ensued.

The Minnehaha case has been cited in many disputes since 1861. At present I am looking at The Texaco Southampton salvage claim. The case was held in NSW in 1982. The Minnehaha was cited.

The tanker had suffered a "switchboard" fire and loss of power 312nm off the NSW coast in Dec 1975. Tugs were engaged. A disputed salvage claim resulted. The tug Kembla II made the claim.

I would be grateful if any one knows about this case and the vessels involved; in any case if you can find any pictures of the tanker you can enjoy a very handsome ship indeed.

    With Thanks

You most probably have this its very short but?

The Ship ‘Texaco Southampton’ v Burley and Others [1982] 2 NSWLR 336
Salvage, who is salvor, crew of tug employed to tow, where tug services are provided under a contract to tow making no provision for salvage and the role of the tug and crew is limited to the performance of that contract then neither the crew nor the tug has rendered voluntary services and they are not entitled to an award as salvors.

    And if you just Google
Ship Texaco Southampton salvage claim there are a few sites that are of interest
    Cheers

    Thanks, Doc.

I have been steaming through the Court of Appeal.
