Default JIM (JAMES HARRY) SPANDLER, late of ANDREW WEIR & CO & WILSON LINE HULL

Good afternoon and thank you for accepting me on to your site.
My father was Jim (James Harry) Spandler. He died in 1986. According to his Discharge Book my dad was apprenticed to ANDREW WEIR & CO from 1941-1944. Unfortunately his book does not record the ships on which he sailed or dates of voyages he made during this period other than to say he sailed on the DABANK from HULL on 15/16 April 1943. The next record is his book is for 16th April 1945 which shows him sailing on the IRWELL from SILLOTH bound for LIVERPOOL.
Is there any way I can find out which ships he sailed on, when and where he sailed to/from during the remainder of this period 1941 - 1945?
Any help anyone can give with this I would be most grateful for.
I would also be pleased to hear from anyone who sailed with my dad during these years or later between 1946 - 1953 when he was with the Wilson Line. He came ashore in 1953 and went to work for the Shipping Federation in Posterngate.
    Thank you. Stay safe!

Stuart, if your father was apprenticed then the ships he served on will not show in his Discharge Book, as apprentices ships were recorded on the back of their Indentures. If he was apprenticed from 1941 to 1944 then the entry in 1943 may have been when may have been acting as uncertificated 3rd Mate.

I cannot help you trace his ships but others will be able to, if you scroll down the forums you will come across Shipping Companies and click on Andrew Weir or Bank Line.

If your father was in Posterngate I will have marched past his office every day at Noon on the way to lunch at Trinity Chambers, after lunch we were set free on an unsuspecting public for 30 minutes before forming up for parade in Trinity House Yard. The Hull Shipping Federation was my ship seeking office after finishing my apprenticeship, I had no intention of going back to PSNC with their dead man's shoes promotion. Regretfully I cannot recall your father, as they were just faces to us, as we wanted to be in and out as quick as possible, as there were quite a few lousy companies/ships around in the 50's.

    Good luck in your endeavours

I am not sure as to what the following Records will actually hold besides the names of apprentices from Kew London, but it may be worth the cost?? There is a possibility that Ship Names may also be mentioned along with a name ???
    Up to you though
Sorry i cannot help more at this time

What Ivan says is corect and if you have his effects more than likely his indentures will be amongst them it is something most keep as reminders of their misbegotten youth. On the back will be the ship(s) he was on with the length of time of each set of articles or crew agreement he was on. This is added all togerther with a total of year’s months and days for a check on his seatime so as to be acceptable for an examination as 2 Mate. If he had any bad remarks likes incomplete indentures his application would probably be nor accepted. Best of luck in your enquiries. Regards JS.
