I was certain Keith until I read the other reports, I guess I added 2 and 2 together and came up with 27, Sherlock Holmes is quite safe I won't be after his job. It must have been a rough night for everyone, 2 ships on the same spot, the Bay of Biscay was living up to its Bad name.

There was a site Plimsol.org but it does not seem to be working or perhaps it's me that's not working. I couldn't get it to find any details on this search although it came up with great results, 16 pages, on a previous search some years ago.

From The Times, 31 Oct 1882:
The Morning Star, English steamer, and the Norwegian vessel
Borntand are reported ashore 20 miles north of Bayonne; crews
    saved.

Thanks for all the leads, looks like I'll be buying some old newspapers Doc.

I'm not sure if Plimsoll.org is still working. I tried it with my desk top and my laptop computer and with the computer at Ubreakit Ifixit repair shop and all I got was "we are having trouble finding that site.". It may be a regional thing but I doubt it as the internet is said to be global. If someone else cares to give it a try from the UK my question was "BoT inquiry Morning Star 1882". The Morning Star was a total lost and 3 men died because of this, so there must have been a Board of Trade inquiry at some point. Strangely I can find no final report only the mention of what seem to be a beginning of one in the Shipping and Mercantile Gazette around the 23rd to 28th Nov 1882.

The 3rd mate John Matthew Adams C08829 signed on the 59788 Marion of Swansea as Mate in Bordeaux 2nd Nov 1882 and signed off in Swansea 16th Dec 1882 according to the Master and Mate's Index so perhaps he gave evidence.

Regret that, I had thought you just could not
find the Plimsoll.org site, I should have checked
    it actually worked my mistake.

Will keep looking to assist further.

    Keith.

Added: Though again not checked out fully via:

    https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/arch...f-ships-online

The Plimsoll ship data project link seems to work ?

    https://southampton.spydus.co.uk/cgi...PRMS=GENPARAMS

Will check it out better in the morning.

You should look up `Port Cities' Southampton the Plimsoll list that is where the majority of BOT records on line. particularly sailing ships in which I have an interest and research. there is no MORNING STAR ON84544 in my 1872 LR but then the Lloyds only has sailing ships in my edition was she a steamer? mariner@chrisroche.co.uk

    Hi Chris,
sorry for the delay in answering. She was a Steamer built in West Hartlepool in 1882 and about 5 months old.

For some strange reason I cannot access the Plimsoll List it may be a firewall in my computer that I don't know how to find and remove.

Port Cities, Southampton has a large, but not complete, archive of maritime losses and offers downloads (free) of the full BOT enquiries and reports. I was very pleased to find the enquiry into the loss of my grandfather's ship "Algitha" 1n 1888. and also reports on several of the Cairns Noble fleet on which other members of my family served.

There seems to be a Crew List for that date and possibly may be some other info ( logs)along with that but not sure you will have to contact the Archives in Canada
    Cheers

    Crew List Index Search Results

Search results for Crew Lists in the Maritime History Archive
Types of Agreements and Accounts page provides an explanation for the codes referring to
the crew agreements held at the Maritime History Archive.
