Hello All,

For christmas this year I am compiling a folder full on information on my great grandad (Ernest William Farmer) so that I can give it to my grandad on christmas day. My grandad new little to nothing about his father other than the fact that he served in the merchant navy around the period of WW2 roughly. After someof my own research i have found that he was born on 2/6/1913 ?(although i have found a document that says 7/6/1913 for the same E.W. Farmer which must just be a mistake) and died i believe 29/11/1969.

The National Archive held a few documents that provided me with information such as his 'Dis A No' R222834. I have found out so far that he has been 2nd Mate on 2 ships, Empire Jonquil around 1941 and Highwater around 1944.

Im sure that he served on many more ships which is why I am asking for a bit of help as I seem to have come to a stage in my reserach where I am just digging up information that I already know. If anyone can find or has any pictures, documents, screenshots or absolutely anything that I can put into this book that will help my grandad uncover the history of his fathers life, it would much appreciated.

Well i guess by the info you post this would be his Seamans Pouch, which in most all cases will only have basic info n him.
You will need his CRS10 which will hold all his Seatime service records.
This is also available at the NA Kew! I will look up the Link in a while and Pst here as well

Hello and welcome Josh,
The file you found with the dob as 7/6/1913 will be his Combined Office Merchant Navy Operations (COMNO) pouch which is held at Kew in piece BT 391/32/148
This file will list any ship he served aboard during Normandy and beyond so I suspect you may already have it with your reference to ss Highwater in 1944 - incidentally, I can't find that ship, Is it a typo?

Vernon you have quoted his CRS 10 in Series II which is the one that goes up until 1972, I think his service record will be held in Series I which is BT 382/564
Of course, Josh, check both files especially if he served at sea beyond 1965 but I note he died in 1969 so hence my train of thought.

Thanks for posting the documents. They show he was still serving aboard ARDINGLY official number, 184351, in 1963 so there is quite a lot of his service you are missing. The best thing you could do to fill in the gaps of his service would be to obtain his CRS 10. Check both files: Series 1 - BT 382/564 and Series 2 - BT 382/2333. Any service prior to January, 1941 will have to be checked individually by using Crew Agreements beginning with EMPIRE JONQUIL in 1941. The Crew Agreement for that ship should show a ship's name if indeed he had one.

Thanks for that Hugh. I must have completly missed where it says his last ship was ARDINGLY (although to be honest i am not the best and reading half of the writting on these documents) but i will reserach that ship now and see if anything else pops up. I am off to TNA sometime next week so I will have a look at both series 1 and series 2 and will post what I find on here.

Regarding crew agreements, how do i go about finding these? is there any websites online that might be quite usefull in my research?

I have also found out that EMPIRE JONQUIL was a part of opperation Ariel between 15-25 June 1940. Is there any information on the documents that suggest that E.W. Farmer served during this period. I see that he was discharged from EMPIRE JONQUIL which was stamped 3 July 1941 but is there any information that suggests he was on board the year before?
