Den, Canada. It was informally adopted following Canadian Confederation in 1867 and, from 1892, it was the official flag for use on Canadian merchant ships. On land, however, the official national flag was the Union Flag. Despite its unofficial status, the Red Ensign was widely used on land as well. Terry.

Talking earlier with my mother, she asked that I reiterate her thanks
to all involved in Canada. My late fathers Red Ensign was donated and
she felt it appropriate, his own words appear below.

“As a rating, my first ship was a Canadian cargo ship, the ‘Gatineau Park’ in 1948. It sailed from Barry to Liverpool where it picked up a local cargo and went up the Manchester Canal to Salford and after that crossed the Atlantic to ports in Canada and the USA. TJG.
