I have the official volume of British vessels lost at sea 1939\45, it lists ALL British vessels lost both Naval and Merchant, even down to barges that were lost to enemy action giving the dates and by whatever, IE torpedo, aircraft etc, there is no listing for a tug HM Tartan.

Hi Keith. I have looked at the info you have provided and it states in the "casualty list" that SMITH Matthew D, died on the Tartan 18 May 1941 DOWS. (Which means Died On War Service) So that may tie in with the very interesting info on the HMS Beaver, has Matthew Smith as drowning on the Tug Tartan, complete with his service number, so that may be correct. Which, as you say begs the question why the Tartan recorded as being torpedoed? I now believe that there are 2 Tartan's one a Tug Boat and the other the Armed Trawler. Have to keep looking to see if there are records of the 2 vessels. Thanks Keith.

No worries, will look further ASAP, thoughts at the mo are that Tartan may have been attacked, pos damaged but,
    not sunk ?

I now agree with your last statement Keith, but there must be 2 Tartan's I think? One an armed trawler and the other a tug? I have seen the info about the 'lost overboard' but cant print it due to 'security' of the document. Also have the recorded death as being 'torpedoed' and added to a memorial plaque. So the mystery continues? Thanks

Hi Des. Thanks for this info, is there a listing for the Trawler HM Tartan?

Hi Des. As you have the official volume of British vessels lost at sea 1939\45, can I ask you to look someone else' vessel up for me? Not sure if I am allowed to do that on this message or do I start a new thread? Thanks.

Best start a new Thread Jeff as this one looks as if it will run for some time on the ' TARTAN ' - so we don't want to confuse people with another subject. Thanks.

Hi Jeff in ' Appeals - Can you help ' - Sub Forum - that would be the best place. Ask for help and details there. Thanks.
