All British ships had the suffix G, not GG, for example: Anchor Line's Elysia (1945) had the callsign GJZK. So Persic would have G and 3 (very annoying) digits! Interesting though, how earlier ships like Persic (1899) had callsigns with the prefix's R and sometimes B. Titanic only had 3 digits, even more odd

There must have been one of my early ships GRDF as is the only one that sticks in my memory. In later years however they ran out of Gs and think although not too sure some began with Z. JS

#13.., Den what was The Bahamas.? Am sure have sailed on at least one ship with a Z as the first letter. It would of course be appropriate for an African flag Zulu being very apt.. Have sailed under Liberian, Panama, various Islands in the West Indies. And of course the Bahamas which today people see the Red Ensign which should be bastardised on the red fly part and swear they were sailing on a British. Ship. The ones I sailed on had their own national flag, the red Ensign flown today is purely to imitate and corrupt people’s thinking. Some would call it business acumen. Others would tell the truth and say sailing under false colours. Cheers JS.

John you could be right because Gib ZDK so was it used by Br. dominions. The old memory box is struggling these days, i said Oz was V but so was Hong Kong Radio. if any more come to mind I will post again, are there any other ROs on site who may have info? RGds Den

ZCRD was the call sign of my first ever ship, registered in Hamilton, Bermuda.
The I.T.U. based in Geneva, publish the list of all ship and shore radio stations and it is a requirement for all ships to carry the 3? Different volumes along with there annual updates.
Along with its official number being engraved on its main beam, all vessels have to have their IMO number painted in a prominent place on its accommodation (or stern)in order that it can be seen by any ship or aircraft.
Also the ships radio call sign has to be displayed prominently in the wheelhouse.

Hello Jim

I worked for Shaw Savill in the early sixties and she used to do the UK to Australia or New Zealand run.

As you correctly state she was a sister ship of the Runic, (Parked on Middleton reef the last I heard) and also, I believe the Suevic.

If New Zealand it would depart from Royal Albert Dock and if Australia she would sail from King George V.
