Re: When approximately did steam replace sail in the merchant navy?
Claimed to be the largest steamship operating in UK today, the Shieldhall still sails from Southampton with visitors and trippers. long gone from trading in her usual cargo of the day, and Southamptons unwanted, and annoyingly deposited off of the Isle of Wight, kt

Re: When approximately did steam replace sail in the merchant navy?
The Turbina is claimed to be the first steam turbine driven vessel and was built to show the royal navy the advantages of using steam turbines to power it's warships as opposed to using steam reciprocating engines. Built by Charles parsons it demonstrated its capabilities by steaming at full speed through the Spithead fleet review at a speed far in excess of that the navy had at the time.
The Turbina can be viewed in the Great hall at Newcastle's Discovery museum. Well worth a visit if you are in the area for not only the Turbina but also for the many other inventions originating from the area.

Re: When approximately did steam replace sail in the merchant navy?
There was quite a long transition period when I was in gigs in 1966 in South Shields the landlady's father was a retired ships carpenter and he had sailed in the 1890s on ships that had sales and a propeller that you dropped into the water when there was no wind. I think the biggest problem was with the early very inefficient engines was how much coal you had to carry and only when things became much more efficient and coal wasn't replacing cargo did steam really take off so I would say there was probably a 50 to 60 year transition.

Re: When approximately did steam replace sail in the merchant navy?
There are numerous paintings on some of the cruise ships showing the early steam ships.
But there were in the first instance many hybrids, steam ships with full sails.
No doubt a bit like belt and bracers, make sure if one fails you still have the other.
I have seen a few paintings where the sails are in full use with very black smoke coming from the funnel, odd ships indeed.
